![]() Relatively speaking, there aren't many anime where the OST makes itself particularly noticeable to me and I will not have a strong opinion on most OSTs because I don't pay attention to it by default, but over the years I developed the ability to just recognize it whenever the use of music plays a vital role in my enjoyment of or emotions towards a certain scene, episode or show. So the combination of him and Yoko Kanno is just always excellent.īut there's many more examples, from Made in Abyss to Bubblegum Crisis, from Madoka to FMA: Brotherhood, from Ping Pong to Fairy Tail that I all fondly remember for their use of music. Watanabe also knows how to use music well, his use of OSTs in Bebop, Champloo, Macross Plus and Space Dandy is always on point. I've read that directors frequently went out of their way to create certain scenes or episodes based on one of her songs, when it's usually the other way round and the composer makes a song based on the scene or theme it is supposed to serve. Some of the shows where the music had a really, really strong impact on the atmosphere, scene composition and overall emotional impact are for example Cowboy Bebop and most other shows Yoko Kanno worked on. Not only can the songs themselves be awesome, but more importantly how you use them shows a lot of talent in a director if they do it well, and depending on the type of show the atmosphere can be what makes or breaks it and the music contributes a LOT to atmosphere and tone. The higher the score the more elements in a show must impress me, and the music is one of them. But when the OST is good, it can be amazing and really pull the anime to the next level, and to get me to give a show a really high score the OST is often an important factor. Can't describe a subjective impression without making it sound too verbose, lol.Īnime is an audio-visual format, so the audio is an important component to consider.Īs with a lot of other elements like animation I don't care very much in the negative sense, meaning I'm unlikely to think much worse of a show just because the OST doesn't stand out to me or is mediocre. Shinsekai Yori, Clannad, Tetsuwan Birdy and Shingeki no Kyojin just to name a few, won't have the same feeling to them without their original soundtracks. Appreciating the soundscape and sound design is something I like to do, especially more so when it amplifies the scene in hand. However, I really like paying attention to the BGM. ![]() ![]() Well, music is as subjective as viewing preferences can get. So how much do you care for anime music outside of the OP and ED? The only times I ever enjoyed an anime's BGM are Jojo, especially the new theme they use when someone does something awesome (whatever it's called, it's also used for commercial breaks), and SnK during certain pivotal moments. I only know the latter composer from Shield Hero, but it doesn't sound all that impressive to me. But every now and then I hear people talk about the composer for SAO or Made in Abyss and say that they're music is amazing. I personally have never paid attention to BGM in anime, mainly because nothing in it even sticks out for me. ![]()
